In the month of June we asked members to read children’s books to post on Facebook. The collection is all posted here.
You may be wondering, why is Emmanuel Presbyterian Church asking its members to read children’s books aloud and posting them on social media?
It is a simple and effective way to break down racial barriers that many of us are unaware of.
Think about it this way, what color are most band-aids?
When you need to buy “flesh” colored tights for your little ballerina at home, what color are they?
When you read your children’s bible, what ethnicity is Jesus?
How about the disciples?
It goes the same for so many children’s books!
The vast majority of the content we consume normalizes white skin and simply ignores the diversity all around us – diversity God values.
You see, underrepresentation of all of God’s beautiful children isn’t helpful.
We think this is a small gesture that everyone can get behind. Let’s normalize melanin of all degrees, hair of all shapes and colors, children from each and every nation of God’s world.
Every human being bears the image of the invisible God. We will continue to celebrate that.
