Easter is so exciting for kids!

All the candy and fun sometimes makes it hard to remember why we are celebrating! My advice? Don’t fight it, embrace it! How? Here is one simple idea:

Jelly Bean Prayer Time!

Prayer is talking with God. It doesn’t have to be long or boring or serious or formal. You can actually have fun together as you pray! Grab some jelly beans (or other colorful candy) and give a handful to each family member—but don’t eat yet!

Challenge each person to say a short prayer for each candy they eat.

Take turns to pray or eat and pray about one color at a time together. And remember, prayers don’t have to be out loud! If there is something you want to pray about privately, just let others know that you want to talk to only God about it.

Do it! It is fun!!

But oh! The sugar rush! Embrace it again! End your Jelly Bean Prayer Time by turning up some fun music. Dance together—and know that God loves each one in your family. He loves the crazy loudness, the independent spirits, the new stage of growth that is bringing new ways that kids are learning to think and question and test boundaries. He delights in the oddness, the quirkiness, and the goofiness of these beloved ones. He loves each one in their brokenness and hurt. And He fully loves and delights in you.

Laugh and pray together. Hug each other and know that you are loved fully, completely, just as you are!

  1. Love this idea. Thanks! My daughter and I used to do her homework in a similar way with skittles ( her favorite candy) when she was a child. Happy Easter!

  2. Happy Easter, Debbie!
Betty and I spent a few days in San Francisco at a quaint AIR BB and toured several Arm Museums, including the DeYoung Art Museum and the Legion of Honor, after we saw the live production of Hamilton at the Opheum Theatre . WOW, was a production with superb acting and great chromatography!
I really enjoy your creative blog, Debbie! In fact, I copied the colored jelly bean prayers on my laptop screen for active reminders in praying. Thanks for your devoted dedication at Emmanuel. You certainly are a gift to the congregation, as well as to your immediate family and friends. I can see why children enjoy the blessings of your active leadership too. Happy Easter To You and Yours, as we celebrate our Risen Lord. Love, Blessings and Jelly Bean Prayers ….. George
P.S. I had suggested earlier to David & Sharon that the church consider contacting Holy Trinity Lutheran Church up the street. I was there to hear Elmer Herema’s choir and noticed that their church pews are quite worn. Perhaps, they would be interested in our refurbished church pews. Just a thought!!
