Accompanying one another on life’s journey is part of the core of who we are at Emmanuel.

This is carried out in a variety of ways, from small study groups, volunteering in the community, social opportunities, learning together and much more.

One particular group that has been going strong for a number of years at Emmanuel is the Senior Luncheon.

Most folks attending are “seniors” but persons of any age are welcome. They meet monthly on a Wednesday from 12pm-2pm for a meal, friendship and then a speaker or entertainer.

Everyone brings their own table service and a salad or other dish to share, and they end up with quite a spread. Dessert and beverages are provided.

“The one Wednesday of the month I don’t have to cook dinner as the luncheon is great! Lots of delicious food!!”

Past features this year have ranged from art historians, learning to fight hunger and poverty locally and globally, the story of the formation of the City of Thousand Oaks to local singers, musicians and authors.

In November, Senior Luncheon invited Gerald E. “Gerry” Olsen to speak. He was a lively and energetic storyteller!

Gerry is the grandson of one of the five original families of the Norwegian Colony, who settled the north end of Conejo Valley in 1890. He is in the picture on the right.

He described the early days, as pioneer Lutheran families first settled here, built the Norwegian Grade, and were instrumental in establishing the California Lutheran University. His first book, “Don Adolfo Camarillo – A Living Legend,” was published in 2014, and now is in its second printing

Senior Luncheon Co-Chairs George Groen & Barbara Magnuson, are seen with Marcia Sheffield, as Gerry Olsen demonstrates how stakes were pounded into the rocks to build the Norwegian Grade.

I visited the group this month. When I arrived I head lots of laughter and chatted with participants to find out what brings them back each month. This is what they had to say:

“Social time with old friends.”

“Connecting with others and feeling at home here.”

“Ability to enjoy great diversity in food. Great speakers and/or talents shared with us.”

“Thankful to George Groen and his staff for organizing the lunches. They work so hard.”

Overwhelmingly, I heard the participants are grateful for this opportunity to gather.

To accompany one another on this life journey. If you are looking for a warm meal, an opportunity to learn and a group that will welcome you with kindness, than this is for you!

I left feeling inspired and so thankful that God provides the time and spaces for connection, laugher and growth when we are open for them.

We would love to have you join us for the next Senior Luncheon! You can see all of the upcoming dates by clicking HERE.
